Line 1: Line 1:
-====== The Belt ======
-“The size of the belt is almost incomprehensible. Hundreds of thousands of stations, some as big as cities. It would take a lifetime to try to visit every one.” - Wendy Wu, 'Missives From Space', 6313AD

-The band of asteroids and a dwarf planet between the orbits of [[Mars]] and [[Jupiter]]. Close to a billion people live in [[Habitats]] in the Belt. Whilst [[Beltship|Beltships]] travel freely throughout the Belt using [[Jump Engines]], contact with the other planets in the solar system is infrequent.
-
-Geographically the Belt is split into: the [[Inner Belt]] (the asteroids closest to the orbit of Mars), the [[Outer Belt]] (the asteroids closest to the orbit of Jupiter), the [[Hildas]] (the small number of asteroids that lie between the Rim and the orbit of Jupiter) and the [[Trojans]] (asteroids that are gravity locked into Jupiter's Lagrange points).
-
-Politically the Belt is chaotic. Most of the Trojan habitats are part of the [[Europan Protectorate]], a fascist state centered on the moon Europa. Ideologically the Protectorate is at odds with the [[Solar League]], a democratic confederation that covers much of the Inner Belt. The Outer Belt is ostensibly part of the League but is mostly comprised of independent habitats. The League has a presence in the Outer Belt but isn't able to provide a high level of security.
-
-Neither the League or the Protectorate claim the Hildas, creating a lawless frontier area where [[Pirates]] and [[Drones]] are rife.
